At Kingsway Junior School, Design and Technology is taught throughout each child's time with us. Our ambitious curriculum has been carefully designed by our experienced and skilled subject specialist to ensure that all pupils develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to become creative, confident and resilient designers.

Our curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum  and has been sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively across each year group. Children are encouraged to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. They learn to research, generate and communicate ideas, select and use appropriate materials and tools, and evaluate their work, considering how products can be improved and refined.

Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, pupils develop technical knowledge and practical expertise across a broad range of Design and Technology disciplines. They explore structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems, and food technology, while applying their understanding of design principles, construction techniques and the iterative design process. Opportunities to analyse, evaluate and reflect are embedded throughout the curriculum, enabling children to learn from both success and challenge.

Food technology forms an important part of our curriculum, giving children the knowledge and skills to understand nutrition, food preparation and the importance of a healthy, varied and balanced diet. Pupils also develop an understanding of where food comes from and how informed choices contribute to healthy lifestyles.

In line with the principles of a high-quality curriculum, our Design and Technology provision is knowledge-rich, inclusive and carefully sequenced so that learning builds over time. The curriculum enables pupils to make meaningful links with other subjects, apply prior learning and develop the confidence to take risks, solve problems and think critically. By the time children leave Kingsway Junior School, they are well prepared for the next stage of their education, having developed the technical knowledge, practical skills and creative thinking expected by the National Curriculum.
