English

At Kingsway, we place a strong emphasis on the development of secure foundational skills in English, including transcription skills such as spelling and handwriting. We recognise that these elements are essential in enabling pupils to develop accuracy and fluency in writing, supporting them to achieve automaticity. This, in turn, reduces cognitive load, allowing children to focus more effectively on composition, vocabulary choice and the impact of their writing.

We believe that strong early foundations in reading, writing, speaking and listening are essential for lifelong success. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils develop these core skills progressively and confidently, in line with the expectations of the National Curriculum.

Reading is a high priority across the school. In line with The Reading Framework, we are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a fluent, confident reader. Our aim is that no child leaves Kingsway unable to read. We therefore place a strong emphasis on early reading, reading fluency and comprehension, ensuring pupils develop the skills and knowledge needed to access learning across the curriculum.

Writing is equally prioritised. In line with the Writing Framework, we ensure that pupils are taught to write clearly, accurately and for a range of purposes and audiences. We use HFL Essential Writing as a planning tool, fully aligned with the National Curriculum, to support a carefully sequenced and progressive approach to writing development.

We actively promote both reading and writing for pleasure. High-quality texts sit at the heart of our English curriculum, and pupils are exposed to a rich and diverse range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Teachers regularly read aloud to pupils, carefully selecting texts that inspire curiosity, imagination and discussion. Alongside this, we provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to write creatively and independently, helping them to see themselves as real authors.

In line with Ofsted expectations for a broad and balanced curriculum, reading, writing, speaking and listening are embedded across all subjects. Pupils are encouraged to articulate their thinking, read widely and apply their writing skills in purposeful contexts throughout the wider curriculum.

We celebrate reading and writing throughout the year, including events such as World Book Day, while maintaining a daily focus on developing a love of literature and language.

Through our English curriculum, we aim to develop confident communicators, enthusiastic readers and capable writers who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.
