At Kingsway Juniors, we teach spelling through the CUSP Spelling scheme, which provides a structured and progressive approach to learning spelling patterns, rules and strategies. Children are taught these patterns and the Statutory Spelling Words through twice-weekly spelling lessons, with regular opportunities to revisit and consolidate their learning.

Current educational research shows that while learning lists of words can help children spell those words correctly in a test, it does not always lead to accurate spelling in everyday writing. The most effective approach is to explicitly teach spelling patterns and provide regular opportunities for children to apply these within purposeful writing. Our spelling lessons and weekly homework are therefore designed to reinforce learning and support long-term retention.

We have also provided the Statutory Spelling Word lists below, so that you can support your child in learning these words at home if you wish. Practising these alongside the strategies and patterns taught in school will help children become accurate, confident and independent spellers.
