The National Curriculum requires children to be able to use certain spelling patterns and spell certain words by the end of Junior School. The words that they are expected to be able to spell are called the Statutory Words.
At Kingsway, we teach children to spell these words and the spelling patterns within them in twice-weekly spelling lessons.
The most recent research tells us that, although learning lists of words improves children's ability to spell those words in a test, it does not help them to spell the words correctly within their writing in the long term. Evidence has repeatedly shown that learning about how spelling patterns work and integrating this learning into children's writing is the most effective way to improve their spelling. We spend time teaching and learning spelling twice a week and provide weekly homework, that is based on this learning.
Here, we provide you with the Statutory Words, so that you can help your child to learn them at home if you would like to.
